HORNGARTH /Whitby and Ulverston 2020 and 2026
RITUAL EXCHANGES 2019-20
Audio and Video

Made in 2020 as part of the Ritual Exchanges project,  Horngarth shows you the processes involved in the  building of The Penny Hedge. or Horngarth.

Likely pre-christian in origin, likely a

vestigial rogation ceremony, the Horngarth service retains its gentle intimacy and scale in the face of the mega-visual culture of tourism and the

performative rituals of the present day.

With thanks to Lol Hodgson, Court Leet Bailiff of Fyling, Tim Osborne, Hornblower and to Doc Rowe and Jill Pidd for their knowledge, generosity and for making the introductions.

First acreened during the Covid Year as part of Whitby's online folk fest, the film returned to Whitby in 2026 within the Hand Of Glory festival of Folklore, with its original music stripped out and  a live soundtrack by Whitby Electro trio AMMONITES involving Chris Corner on Octave Bass, Mike Knight Keyboard and Chris Whitehead on e-bowed lap steel, with John on Bowed Psaltery.

The version here (right) is music-free.

The Horngarth theme is on the Bandcamp page. Below are links to related pieces for radio and screening.
